The Orange County Register: The Home Page: Community Connection: Charity golf tournament set for Oct. 6
(by Delene Garbo)
Dust off those clubs, take a few practice swings, and mark your calendar for Oct. 6, when Valley Building Materials will hold its eighth annual charity golf tournament benefiting HomeAid Orange County, the charitable outreach of the Building Industry Association of Southern California.

This year's tournament promises to deliver the goods in more ways than one. Held for the third-consecutive year at Aliso Viejo Golf Club, the VBM tournament touts an array of raffle prizes rivaling any local tournament.

The sale of raffle tickets begins at 9 a.m. with sales continuing throughout the day. The mega raffle - including gifts such as stereos, golf gear and barbecues - will be held at 5:30 p.m. during the awards ceremony, along with Lakers' box seat; golf outings; and other opportunities also available as part of the super silent auction.

The scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. followed by cocktail hour at 4:30 p.m. and a buffet spread provided by Peppino's Italian Restaurant. The tournament cost is $250, which includes a promo bag, a continental breakfast, a box lunch and a buffet dinner; dinner only is $60 per person.

Proceeds of $49,090 from the last VBM tournament represent the largest single contribution HomeAid Orange County has ever received from one company; a designation VBM has held for two consecutive years and a factor that contributed to the company's recognition as the HomeAid Orange County Rainbow of Hope Corporate Award recipient for 2003.

HomeAid Orange County board member, Greg Currens, chief executive officer of Irvine-based Style Interior Design Inc., was instrumental in forming the partnership between VBM and HomeAid Orange County.

"Without the generous support of the community, the building industry, its trade partners and associates, HomeAid would not be able to continue moving forward in its mission to aid the temporarily homeless," Currens said.

Tournament organizer Chris Crowley, architectural representative for Valley's Lake Forest and Yucaipa stores, said that many of the company's commercial and residential architects, contractors and designer clients participate year after year.

"This tournament is a much-anticipated, can't miss event," Crowley said.

HomeAid builds and renovates shelters for temporarily homeless in Orange County. Those served by HomeAid include victims of domestic violence, abandoned or neglected youth, homeless pregnant women, adults living with HIV/AIDS, the mentally disabled and those made homeless by job loss or catastrophic illness. The proceeds from Valley Building Materials Golf Tournament support HomeAid's shelter-development program now in its 14th year of service.
